I'm taking an unplanned vacation in a couple of weeks so thought I would stay within driving distance. I would love to be on a beach and checked out Port Aransas which looked very depressing frankly. So now I'm exploring the Hill Country and Highland lakes. It's really hard to tell if any of the hotels/cabins/etc. have actual beach like areas where you can swim in the lake. I don't want to go to a hotel to swim in the pool. Any suggestions?

CHeck a site like Homeaway and look for private homes for rent. Many are lakefront and cheaper than hotels.

Good suggestion!

I have also been looking at places on the Frio river in Leakey. It appears to be spring fed, clean and great for swimming. Any body taken a trip over there?

We stayed in a cabin (house) between Concan and Leaky and it was great. The house was about 100 feet from the river with a porch on the back to sit out and see the river. Lots of wildlife. I don't think the river was deep enough to swim right there, but there used to be (not sure with the drought) some good swimming holes on the Frio. It is a beautifully crystal clear river.

There are still some good swimming spots on the frio, even with the low flows.
It took me a while to understand the title of this thread....haha...I was thinking vaca as in Spanish for cow....lake vaca: why I never heard anyone call a stock tank that...haha. Sure there are lake vacas all over the hill country, only one of mine still has water in it...and that will be gone in less than a month.
