There is a good chance I may be moving out to Austin to work for an engineering firm.

Just wondering about the kind of nightlife in Austin. I know UT Austin is nearby, so I don't know if there is a huge college bar scene, or just a large bar scene.

Also, any other suggestions on things to do aside from drinking to meet people my age would be appreciated.

I'm 23 and very social.

Well, which are you looking for? I'm not big on the bar scene, but I've been to a few I liked that wouldn't be part of the "college bar scene".

Are you active or outdoorsy at all? People like to stay fit here, through running, cycling, swimming, paddling, etc. I'd search the web or Yelp or something for social groups that revolve around those activities. I have friends who are part of groups that run/cycle on the weekends or weeknights.

Best of luck. If you decide to come, welcome!

Major party areas...

6th Street...drunk college students, date rape crowd.
Warehouse District...professional crowd, cougars, gays, those looking for sugar daddies/mommas. etc.
West 6th Street...Dallas douche bags in shiny shirts.
South Congress/First/Lamar...hipsters and locals angry at the hipsters
Gentrified east side areas....hipsters too hip for South Congress/First/Lamar
Chicon & Rundberg areas...crackheads
Lake Travis...ex frats guys that love cocaine, strippers, and boats.

True or not, that is the single best thing I've seen written about Austin!

sounds awesome.

I usually go play tournament paintball so I've already got in touch with some teams in the area as well as UT Austin's team.

Other than that, I guess I'll start checking out other activities to do.

In regards to "6th Street...drunk college students...." anyone suggest some nice housing nearby to live in? I rather walk home then drive or take a long cab ride.

That just about sums it up for the 20-50 crowd.

Didn't you post this exact same question a few months ago? I think the only difference was comparing the scene to San Diego.

^^pretty much this!

and than you got house party, ranch parties, and lake house parties. But those are all excluseive and you only get into a party like that if you know someone! but every city has people who throw their own house parties! haha!

Austin has a good nightlife. But do you compare it to that of Say SF,LA, NY or chicago even, miami or any major city in europe from london to hell berlin etc etc.

Oh west campus has all the college frat parties of course. And you will quickly learn that UT is like any state school! in many ways. Tons of idiots who only party. You will also meet a lot of people who dont go to UT who party their, and you will meet a lot of people who failed or get kicked out. because UT has a very high rate of people who fail or get kicked out who still stick around. But its all fun if your into crazy parties.
