I might be moving to Austin next year. My only concern is the weather.

I live in Vegas right now, and my biggest problem is the heat. I can deal with it, but I'd prefer to live somewhere with cooler summers.

STANDARD VEGAS WEATHER: In July, the average day is easily 110 degrees, if not higher; it's glaringly bright, sunny, and extremely dry. Falls and springs are warm (80s-ish), but very dry and windy. Winters are cool (50s, usually), but again, very dry and windy.

How does Austin weather compare? I know that there's more rain (obviously), but is the overall climate more mild?

In July, our normal temp is 96...and this year we've been below normal until this weekend. Its supposed to be in the high 90's, the weather man says it may hit 100. I've lived here when it was over 100 for a solid month...but that's every few years. 110+ would be record breaking, news making weather here.

Our winters can be cold...but the norm is 60's or 70's between cold fronts. And cold fronts are....well, cold! (Anywhere from 40's to ice!)

I think you'll like the weather...sounds like its a little cooler and wetter. You'll definately like the green

I lived in Las Vegas for 12yrs. I've been in Austin for two years now and although sometimes it gets muggy, I don't complain about the weather. It's such a better feel than Vegas.

I really like the weather here, especially compared to Vegas.

I'm trying to make sense of that too. Vegas gets hot, and so does Austin. I think the humidity here makes it feel hotter and the air thicker when the temperature rises. I've been to Nevada and Arizona when it reached 100+ and it didn't feel as hot to me there as it would here, were it to reach 100+

That's kind of interesting. My husband and I were commenting last night that the heat isn't as bad as we expected. It was well over 90 last night but there was (and has been) a constant breeze and some humidity.

I've never been to Vegas, but if it's anything like Phoenix, then it's bad. I know someone who left Phoenix for Austin because of the heat.

I have spent a lot of time in Vegas and to me, the worst part isn't the heat, it's the unrelenting sun. Day in, day out, there's not a cloud in the sky. Austin actually has weather. I can't tell you how nice it is in Austin to have clouds sometimes and actual rain.

Austin's heat has a better feel to it. Sure it's still hot but I'd take humid heat to a fierce unrelenting dry heat any day. A Las Vegas breeze is like having a blow dryer blow hot air on you while the sun is blazing on you, plus with all the sand, deserty landscape and blacktop it's just reflecting right back on you. Here at least the grass will absorb some of it, and the clouds soften it some.

I guess you just have to experience both to know. There may be people who prefer the dry heat but I've been happier with Austin's weather.

Ha ha, if you've just moved to Austin this year, be warned, this isn't a 'typical' Austin summer. I know the weathercasters have been saying it, but listen. It's usually 5 months of no rain, 100+ degrees and 100% humidity. I love it but don't expect the same thing next year!
