Hello, I am from San Antonio but don't get up to Austin much. My buddies are coming in from out of state and will have a hotel on 6th street for a week in mid-august. We are all 23..

Besides the normal for our age 6th street at night... what are some cool things to do in the austin area so I can show them a good time while they are here. Preferably cost effective.

Topics: -Something cool to do (lake travis cliff jumping, public access etc)
-Cool bar suggestions for all days of the week for our age crowd
-Awesome restaurant options

thanks!

Just a few suggestions:

Esther's Follies

Eat interesting hamburgers at places like Huts or Casino el Camino or Hopdoddy

Eat at Hula Hut (Lake Austin)

Rent a boat on Lake Travis for a half day or a whole day; take a box of fried chicken to eat cheap and throw the bones (but not the other trash of course) in the lake.

Catch some live music somewhere

Swim, sightsee at Barton Springs

If we ever get rain, Hamilton Pool is great! Without rain, it's nothing.

I would not recommend cliff jumping in Lake Travis right now due to the lack of water.

For eats near downtown here are some popular places. These are not necessarily the best in town in any category but most are pretty damn good.

tacos - Torchy's, Wahoo's
burgers - Huts, P Terry's
pizza - East Side Pies, Homeslice
bbq - Stubbs, Ironworks
texmex - Iron Cactus, Gueros
lake - Oasis, Carlos & Charlies

bars near downtown - explore for yourself, your taste at 23 will be way different from mine

You can still go skinny dipping at Hippy Hollow on Lake Travis. It is a legal nude swimming area and Travis County park on the lake. You might be able to find some cliff jump places there, but check what is below water carfeully first as there could be boulders in places. The best way to enjoy this heat is to be out on the water.

Have lunch or dinner or both near there at the Oasis on top of the hill overlooking that part of the lake. You drive right by it on the way to Hippy Hollow. They have live music and dancing Wed-Sunday. The OASIS Restaurant- Sunset Capital of Texas

I was there last Saturday and it was fantastic. You don't get the waterfall, but there's still a steady trickle and the water is still wonderful.

If you go on a weekend, be there before ~10 or 11am or you'll be in line and have to wait for a vehicle to leave.

Default rent a kayak

Rent a kayak on lake austin - $10 bucks an hour I think .

keeps you cool too! (they have paddle boards and canoes too)

Oasis is an amazing view. I was amazed the first time I came to austin and saw the view. The food is ok, but I go for the view.

By all means find a pool.

If you feel like hanging outside and having a few beers, I recommend W. Sixth street, big porches and lovely mister fans!

Momo's is down on w. sixth and normally has some good bands. Make sure to pick up a Chronicle when you are here so you can find out what bands are playing etc.

Have a good trip!

Hamilton Pool is not nearly as bad on a weekday. However, I'd still give them a call in the morning to get a feel for busyness. They have limited parking spaces, so if it fills up you have to wait for someone to leave...which I love, because even on weekends, once you get in, it doesn't feel too crowded.
