Hello all,

I'm relatively new to Austin, moved here in July for work. I currently live with roommates, but my lease is ending soon and I'm looking to move into an apartment of my own.

I really like the Castle Hill neighborhood, specifically the Blanco and W 11th ST area. I drove by some apartments right at the end of W 11th, but I cannot remember the name. "Castle Place," perhaps. Anybody familiar with this place?

I'm looking for a 1 bedroom, or a nicer studio in the $700 - $900 range.

Any suggestions?

Try Craigslist. When I was looking years ago, that's where I found my options. I didn't end up moving out though.

I searched on "Clarksville" just FYI.

Seoid is right. The "Castle Hill" area you speak of is known as Clarksville.

That might be realtor's Clarksville, but it is not historic Clarksville, which would be the neighborhood immediately west of Castle Hill, the acreage given to freed slaves from the Pease Plantation and the oldest former slave community west of the Mississippi. Half of it was destroyed by the building of Mopac, but now Clarksville is the tiny area between West Lynn and Mopac and 6th and Waterston. Castle Hill is in Old West Austin, which is one of my favorite Austin neighborhoods - some historic architecture left, truly walkable, if you don't mind the hills, home to many of the best restaurants in Austin and a stone's throw from the hike and bike trail, downtown and campus.

It is very expensive to buy, but rentals are oddly reasonable. I found a great place just off 8th and Blanco through the classifieds of the Statesman: a beautiful one bedroom duplex built in 1910 with a wrap around porch, 12 foot ceilings, original hardwood floors and moldings, stained glass windows, clawfoot tub and a backyard with huge pecan trees for the princely sum of $750 a month ( no washer and dryer) Granted that was a few years back, but my experience of the neighborhood is that landlords simply place "For Rent" signs on the curb and places get snapped up. Craigslist is useless for such places. Drive, or better, walk or bike around where you want to live and call the numbers on the signs, or check out the neighborhood bulletin board next to the Fresh Plus on West Lynn. Good luck, I hope you find something. It really is one of the most delightful Austin neighborhoods.

I was just saying when I was looking for a rental in that area on Craigslist, every single result for "Clarksville" was in that historic area. But sure, technicalities.
