The problem with getting to Ft Stockton is that the hotels are sold out a lot of the time due to proximity to Big Bend. Make reservations beforehand. That could be an issue in Van Horn also. Next stop is Ozona and last time I made that drive, there were only 2 hotels. El Paso's great and worth a stop, IMO.

There is one very cool place to stop in between El Paso and SA, actually--Balmorhea SP with an awesome, huge spring fed pool just off the interstate:

TPWD: Balmorhea State Park

There are rooms in the park and there are also rooms in the town.
