80 is quite livable during the day. I kept my thermostat at 85 (with about a 5 degree swing on it...need a new one) through the hottest month of the year and got used to it pretty fast.

Thought I would chime in since I'll add a data point for a very efficient house (1500 sq ft, 3/2, 1 story, 16 seer 2-stage American Standard a/c, gas furnace).

May 2011 - 454 kwh - $36.95
Jun 2011 - 556 kwh - $46.30
Jul 2011 - 773 kwh - $70.43
Aug 2011 - 893 kwh - $83.77
Sep 2011 - 915 kwh - $86.21

Dec 2011 - 350 kwh - $30.10

Last month added to show usage without A/C running. House is set at 82 when we are away, 78-79 when we are there. Lower if we have guests, but it "feels" too cold to me if it is set below 76.

Cheers,
-Jason

Are you on Austin Electric?

I just looked at my SoCal Edison bills for the last few months and it definitely looks like we're paying more in general - which wouldn't surprise me as everything is more expensive here in California. (I have a 2-bedroom apt and the thermostat is set at 78 during the summer when I'm at home, and 85 when I'm not at home during the day.)

Jul - 626 kwh - $82.62
Aug - 664 kwh - $87.74
Sep - 558 kwh - $75.26
Oct - 299 kwh - $42.01
Nov - 183 kwh - $25.69

Hi Rah62. Yes, on Austin Energy. Costs are approx. 10 cents/kwh if you use about 1000 kwh/month, rate is less for less usage (big rate change at 500 kwh).

However Austin Energy is proposing a $22 residential customer charge sometime next year (up from $6 now). That would cause a large (40+ %) jump in my monthly electric bills.
