We have an attic fan - a whole house fan - that works wonderfully in the nicer months of the year to get fresh air throughout the house. The problem is that some times it works, and sometimes it doesn't. I think I need to have it serviced, but I have no idea what kind of technician does this. Would it be AC people? Any recommendations on who to call?

You need to call a vet to get the squirrels that run on the wheel that powers the fan healthy again .

The title begs the answer "Ghost Busters!", but if it is not a poltergeist and that doesn't work, I might try just a general electrician, since I would assume it is an electrical problem first. Some of the A/C places may also do attic fans, not sure. I used to do a 'distance search' on the online yellow pages and find one-man operations close to my house. You often end up with independents and/or older/semi-retired people that tend to have a lot of experience.

That would be my first call.

I would probably call a general handyman type service or perhaps an electrician. It could be a bad fan or a wiring issue I suppose. The AC guys are probably pretty busy this time of year.

Don't call an AC service company that will charge a lot of money for their highly skilled technicians to troubleshoot something as technologically simple as a whole house fan (about as simple as a table fan you buy at Walmart, just larger). As someguyatx said, call a handyman.

No hurry though...it could be two MONTHS before you would want to use it!

I don't think we've had any OUTside air that we wanted INSIDE the house since April or May.

Attic Fan is simple tech. You could probably remove and replace your existing unit with a screwdriver and wrench.
