I have the opportunity to fly to Austin to interview with a large technology company. The job pays less than I make now, but I really dont want to live where I am. I would be making about 40k a year, but the job would give me the time to go to college full time as well. I am a veteran, so college is completely taken care of.

My question is will I be able to live on 40k in Austin? The company has agreements with a few apartment complexes for small discounts and really low move in fees, so that would help. It is a fairly significant pay cut, but I realize the benefit of college. Any advice or information is appreciated.

You can live on $40K in Austin, so long as you're sensible and prepared to live frugally. If you can get your college degree and have a job while doing it, sounds like a pretty workable situation for a few years.

$40k is easy in Austin. You won't be living downtown but you can be comfortable in Central or South Austin in an apartment or condo.

I've lived in Austin all my life and haven't made over $25/yr. Very doable.

One person? No kids? Totally doable. I did it for years when I was single for much less and have friends who are doing it still. Some of those apartment complexes are waaay expensive. I would look around on my own first.

If you have the post 911 GI bill you will be looking at bringing in an extra 1200 a month with an Austin ZIP. That's $54,400 a year if you didnt factor in the GI bill kick in to your 40K. Even if your using the Montgomery GI Bill you still can get a good chunk.

You can do it.... Free college, a kicker and a full Salary. DONE! What more could you ask for?

Thanks for all the input. My GI Bill is the post 9/11, so everything is adding up to be almost where I am now, while working less and going to school full time. It looks like I will be moving to Austin soon, just hoping everything works out.
