Leaving Las Vegas for Austin. Not familiar with the area at all. Single mom in my 40's. Need information on safe areas to live with focus on great public schools and inexpensive housing. (I only make about 35k yr). No need for public transportation as I have a car, but would like to avoid long commute. Suggestions????

Can you tell us more about where you will be working? The Austin metro area is huge.

I have no clue!!! I would either be looking for employment in a physcian's office (management) or as an Executive Assistant to CEO's, COO's etc.....If they fail me, as a massage therapist as I am liccensed for that as well

Honestly, I can't imagine getting by as a single mother making only $35K per year in any of the safe Austin areas with great public schools. If you have other income coming in for child-support then yes, maybe parts of Round Rock or Leander, but the commute could be long depending on where you're working.

I think instead of giving us your annual income, let us know what your wants are in housing and how much you can afford to pay. 2 bedroom apartment or something bigger?

Just fyi my admins have always made about 40-50K. It was extremely difficult to find qualified admins. Some of my big wig ceo friends have paid their admins as high as 70K. Kids right out of school are making 40K+

From my point of view the best bang for your buck school wise is right along 183 around duval, oak knoll and mcneil on the south/west side of 183. The elementary and middle schools feed into westwood. Although the schools are round rock, the area is most definitely austin. The area nearest to 183 is also relatively inexpensive.

Thanks everyone!! Mark311 I'd need a 2bd rental that allows large dogs initially at about $8-900 mo. Austin97 I have been managing a solo physician's office the last 17 years while assisting my (then) Executive husband and raising children, hence the salary differential. But I like your figures Round Rock, Leander and Hutto have been suggested to me, but I haven't read anything that makes me go "Yes!" That sounds good. Looking for a more family oriented atmosphere for my daughter (coming from Vegas that shouldn't be hard!), and outdoor activities like hiking, parks, swimming, museums etc.

More family oriented than Round Rock, Leander and Hutto? Those are all family friendly. Actually quite a few of the outlying towns and burbs are family friendly. If you want closer to hiking and parks maybe Cedar Park, Dripping Springs or further West of town.

I meant more family oriented than Vegas. Glad to know that those ares are good for children. I have a friends that live in Balstrop (?) and Florence, but those seems a bit out there. Not sure of the job opportunities if I go out that far.

I think you're going to need to organize your list of "wants" in terms of priorities. One of the biggest problems on your list is going to be finding a rental that accepts large dogs. If you only have one large dog, doable, but it's going to limit your choices. A friend was just recently looking, and she found it so frustrating as quite a few apartments consider a "large dog" to be anything over 20 pounds, and say that they'll allow small dogs, but won't rent to anyone with a "large dog." Finding a rental for multiple large dogs may be a nightmare.

The next issue is going to be finding a rental with good schools in that price range if you want to be close to downtown. You mentioned not wanting Hutto, Leander, Round Rock, but those would actually be the perfect places to look. You could also probably find something in parts of northwest Austin (Far West, perhaps) in housing that often has a lot of UT students. But again, you may find not all of those available because of the big dog issue.

Overall, Austin is good for families. You may need to reconsider how far you're willing to drive because of your price range and needing housing with good schools that will accept your dog(s).
