Yep, it is a marketing gimmick from way back....as long as I have been in Austin, they have had the upside-down signs.

Yep, Trainwreck is right again! I grew up in San Antonio in the '70's and, if I recall, it started with one laundramat with the upside down sign, and got so much attention that it has evolved into an institution.
I'm not sure if that one place evolved into a chain, or if everyone started copycating the trick.....
