Retirement? the teacher Benefits? Not sure about her district, but our health benefits aren't cheap and they increase every year.

To be honest, my dh's salary will eventually pass hers. But only if he increases his responsibility, moves up into management. She could do that, too, and make a huge salary jump (but she doesn't want to be an administrator). If he stayed in the same position for 22 years, with about the same job description as new employees, his salary wouldn't increase as much as hers did.

I'm not saying teachers shouldn't make more and get better benefits...they should! What they do is difficult and so important. I'm just saying, given the way things are now in the public and private career sectors, we all have to carefully plan our careers and for our financial future.

It really bums me out. It is looking more and more like Austin is not the best place for us both being teachers. We are going to have to make a list of positives and negatives with our new information that we learned. A couple of weeks ago we were ready to pack our bags.

Homes program gets $75M boost - Austin Business Journal:

Here's an excerpt from the above article:

"DeEtta Culbertson, spokeswoman for the Texas Education Agency, says affordable home loans are a tool in a larger box of perks used to recruit highly qualified teachers.

Other programs include reimbursement for those who buy classroom supplies and forgiveness of teachers' student-loan debt."
