I found the cutest little chocolate lab puppy the other day, but by the time I got there to pick her up, somebody else had beaten me to her.

I'm finding it extremely difficult to locate labs in or near Austin. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm not interested in bloodlines, breeding or showing, but I'd prefer a lab over a mix. I've been to several shelters and they all seem to be full of pit bulls... don't want one of those, sorry pitt bull lovers!

I don't mind going through a reputable breeder, but I'd prefer not to have to pay an arm and a leg if somebody knows of a regular person just trying to find hopes for some puppies. And I don't want to go searching for that guy who sells puppies out of the back of his truck that somebody mentioned in a previous thread!

I just want a cute little chocolate lab girl to join the family! (black lab would be okay too, but I really want a chocolate one!)

I hate to say that I was going to post this even though I am TOTALLY against it. I couldn't help but to laugh. Nice form.

Try Heart of Texas Lab Rescue!
Heart of Texas Lab Rescue

You can go to TLAC (Town Lake Animal Shelter) and register your breed interest and they will send you emails when a lab pup comes in.

Lab pups are not hard to come by! APA! has some beautiful blond lab mix pups right now (Violet, Jezebelle, Benjamin Bratt) Available Dogs | Austin Pets Alive!

Beautiful bigger dogs are very common at the shelters surrounding Austin, try the Bastrop Shelter and the Lockhart shelter.

Also, the best time to find purebred dogs in the shelters runs from December 26th through January when breeders dump the puppies they bred for Christmas who didn't sell.

DM for more information and tips on finding a great pup!

Thanks for the tips! I went to see Jezebelle and her siblings the other day. Turns out that their mother "looks like a lab but only weighs 20 pounds" and "I think the father is a chow." They were supercute puppies but I don't want a sort of looks like a mini lab / chow mix. It felt kinda like false advertising to me. I'll keep looking. Thanks for the tip on registering with TLAC. I'll do that!

Couldn't help but wonder what it is "you better be ready" for. They are incredibly smart dogs, the ones I have known were well behaved.

I had an Australian Shepherd/Coon hound mix that was an awesome dog. He grew to be a bit larger than either normally are. I'm not sure what you were referring to be ready for but he was a handful when he was young. He was also very intelligent and independent.

We found our first lab through Red Iron Kennels out in Manor. You might give them a call and describe what you are looking for, and ask them if they know of any litters coming up. They're great guys (and good trainers for obedience and hunting).

Good luck!
