Some posts above were deleted. You can't discuss the issues behind this protest in this local forum because they fall into the forbidden category of national politics. City-Data requires that all discussions about national politics take place in the Politics and Other Controversies forum and subforum.

The issues behind the protest are national politics and cannot be discussed here.

You can discuss that there is a protest/counter-protest and the protests' impact on the local area (traffic, crowds, etc.). You should avoid discussing what
protesters/counter-protesters are saying in words or signs about the issues, because it's too hard for others to resist making that the focus of the topic.

You can discuss anything else local about the protest. (Such as if local politicians were there or if local politicians supported/denounced it in the local media.)

Members have asked why we can discuss it here at all... it's a local event, with the potential for local impact and local interest. Just focus on the local aspect of the topic and you'll be fine.

Bingo!

Wrong protest, wrong place. I hope they don't mess up traffic here.

News reports list about 150-200 people at this event mid day far less than the expected turnout.

Probably had to get back to mom and dad's place to do laundry and get lunch. They'll be back when the newscrews are down at 6:00pm.

While I don't really understand what these people are protesting, and I don't think they understand either, it really makes you look like a fool when you banter around phrases like "patchouli smoking" or that these protestors "live with mom and dad".

If you look at occupywallstreet, it's not just teenagers or young adults fresh out of college. Educate yourself. It may be easy to sit back and make snotty remarks, or assume that all the protestors are just angry hipsters, but that's simply not the case. I wonder if you all would make the same broad comments about Tea Partiers.......oh, probably not, b/c I recognize most of you as far right hacktivists who go absolutely bonkers when someone makes fun of the tea party.

So, the right says "don't make fun of the tea party! show some respect! We aren't silly little hipsters like those occupywallstreet people"

And the left says "Don't make fun of occupywallstreet! Show some respect! We aren't stupid inbreds like those tea party people"

And you both look like fools.

You say you don't understand what they are protesting against, yet you tell people on this forum to educate themselves? Pot calling kettle...

It's really nothing more than a political stunt and distraction from the REAL problems in this country right now. 150 people showing up across from the Capitol claiming that our economic system is unfair hardly qualifies as a "movement." The vocal minority is getting their 15 minutes and it will quickly fade.

OccupyAustin as well as OccupyWallStreet is to protest corporate takeover of the US federal government.

It's no longer ...."that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.” President Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) folks...regardless of your political leanings....it is now of the corporation, by the corporation, for the corporation.
