We recently bought a house and the landscaping went in yesterday. The trees they put in are different and bigger than all the other trees they put in the yards of the other homes in the neighborhood. The leaves look like a maple leaf to me, but I didn't think maples were planted in Texas? The back side of the leaf is considerably lighter than the front, and the bark is a lighter color than the usual dark brown bark that I am seeing on trees around here.

Picture is below... thoughts?

I'd take a leaf to the nursery to be sure. It might be a silver leafed maple which is not a good tree for this area. Again, to be sure, take a leaf or small branch, to a nursery for identification.

orngkat --- I think you nailed it! I looked up Mexican Sycamore and it looks a lot like our trees. Good to know it isn't a sliver leafed maple.

Yep, definitely a Mex. Sycamore. I just planted two in my own yard. They're very fast growers, yet supposed to be long lived. They're also supposed to be resistant to diseases that afflict the native sycamores. They seem to be an all around good choice for a shade tree in our area.

I have the feeling we'll be seeing more and more of these planted in our area in the coming years, kind of like the Monterrey Oak.

The leaves of maple and sycamore are very much alike. Sycamore tends to be more fuzzy, which, of course, doesn't show in the picture. Some sycamores have leaves that are easy to tell from maples, as they don't have nearly as many teeth an are more deeply lobed. But others are very similar. Sycamore trees tend to have smoother, more "camo" patterned bark. I have also had trouble with telling them apart, and have to get out my tree books to identify them. BJB seems to be pretty certain in his ID, and I imagine he is right.
