Hello, I am trying to locate a local company who can replace my traditional wooden staircase with a modern, iron baluster staircase?? I am new to Austin and on a budget. I've come across online websites to purchase the materials, but have no idea how I would install the stairs. Help, please!

S-F, I've got a feeling that 'replace staircase' and 'budget' are rarely seen in the same sentence.

For me, that would be a 'one-tool' project...that tool being the credit card.

Good luck!

It's not a small job. We've used a local carpenter and it cost us in the range of 2-3K, and that is removal of old low-wall and stair rails and replacing with iron balusters, post and step. It's pretty labor intensive. You have to sand the wood, measure/insert the balusters, demo drywall. Also, materials aren't cheap either. The balusters we got from BMC and it cost us I think 4-8 per. We have two staircases, so let's just say that only the main stair in the house got remodeled. I'll give you his name/number if you are interested.

Sorry to hijack this thread...

But what about the opposite? Replacing iron balusters with drywall? We have about 5 feet that wraps around from the catwalk to the study nook. The blueprint clearly showed that area was to be drywalled. During construction, we noticed that iron balusters were installed. We left it alone. But in retrospect, the study nook overlooks the family room, so drywall would have been more conducive to studying. I always wondered if it would difficult or even worth it. The kids currently don't use the area to study, but once we get the nook situated, we plan to have them do homework there.

That should be relatively inexpensive to do. Send me a PM if you need a contractor recommendation.
