I've posted several items for sale in the past few weeks with good descriptions, pics, etc (I've been using CL to sell stuff occasionally for years)...and have gotten no legit action on it.

Is that common in Austin? The other two cities I lived in before I could sell stuff within a day or two no problem consistently.

Anyone know of an alternative with good traffic/results (other than EBay)?

Depends on what you are selling. The M4M section is always hopping.

Seriously though I have never had a problem with GIVING stuff away on Clist. For example, I had a filing cabinet I wanted to get rid of, and when I said "free to whomever wants to come pick it up" I had about 18 people respond.

My sister buys big ticket items like furniture and such off CList too.

Your mileage may vary, You may have to post items multiple times. Like most sales, you just have to find that one buyer.

I've found that items need to be priced right (ie. cheaper than ebay) and be fairly desirable for Craigslist. Most items that I put up for sale on Craigslist are things that are not worth shipping and they do normally go in a day if priced right. Things like collectibles normally won't sell and are better suited for ebay where you have a much larger group to offer them to. I've sold camera equipment, furniture, cell phones, and cars on Austin Craigslist very quickly over the past few years.

I have tried to give things away on CL in the past, like a deluxe water bed and a boat anchor but received NO responses.

We are in a financial meltdown right now. If your items aren't priced cheap people aren't going to respond.

Do a search on CL and see how much similar items are going for. Chances are you're prices are too high.

At one time, CL in Austin was one of the most heavily used CLs in the country. Don;t know if it is still true now, though. I sold a 'fridge on CL pretty quick, but that was the only time I used it.

In the last month, i've managed to sell a car for PPV to the first buyer. An yet older car i'm selling is still languishing there.

Lots of spam and scam replies too. Just have to be discerning to weed them out.

AFAIK, CL is the only viable Classifieds.
