I am terrified of the huge centipedes that we have here. They are aggressive and bite or sting. I have heard of them getting into the house? How?! They are huge!

They might sneak in with firewood or if you have cracks around your doors. Otherwise, I can't imagine. I'm glad I haven't had any in this part of world

OK. I live on a greenbelt, and I have seen just about everything here. Roaches the size of SUVs, 4 1/2 foot rattlesnake in my backyard, tarantulas, coral snakes, I was even bitten by a scorpion in my very own bed as I slept. But I have yet to see one of those horrid centipedes (((shudder))). If I ever do, I think that may just be my queue to pack up and leave.

We live in San Antonio and we've encountered about 4 centipedes in 10 years. Only 1 even came CLOSE to getting to the house; all the rest were encountered on our property. The one that came close got stuck between the windscreen and the window. We sprayed it heavily like UC Davis cops pepper spraying non-violent protestors. BOO-YAH!

There are about 200 million points of entry into your house for the enterprising bug. Centipedes like things to be damp and dark, so although you may hear the occasional horror story, most of them will not end up in your house. And if they do, they are not like the face huggers in aliens and will lie in wait and burst forth from the shadows to attack you. They are rather easy to handle. Scoop them up in a dust pan, put them back outside.
There are a LOT of bugs in central texas. You will encounter them at some point. Keep your house clean, don't leave food out, don't leave doors open, make sure yours screens don't have holes in them, and you should be okay. When the occasional bug makes an appearance, remember you are bigger than it and it cannot kill you, so histrionics are not called for. You will be okay!

Hoffdano X 2.....no centipedes here, but 2" black scorpions. How'd they get here? Oh, yeah.....I left the door open for about 5 mins., etc. Centipede...............big worm. Scorpion......all I can say is my broom is quite effective.

A friend of mine was bitten by one at work years ago. He was in a fishbowl office at Trilogy I believe. He apparently dropped his pants for the world to see because it crawled up his leg. He had to go to ER because he had a bad reaction to the bite. I was working with his wife at the time and she got the call from his coworkers. Her first out loud thought was "I hope he had on the new boxers I bought him at the Gap." LOL. He was fine...but it was a really icky thought for a long time to come.

Found one in my house today
Old thread, I know, but found one of these things in my house this morning. Not sure if I attached pic correctly. If not, it was about 6 inches long. I was heading to the bathroom at about 6:30 and my cats were playing with something. I couldn't see well but initially feared it was a snake. I screamed when I turned on the light. Quite a shock. Hope it doesn't have any friends nearby! Time to move up my pest control appointment.
