Round Rock, founded 1851

Georgetown, founded 1848

Elgin, founded 1871 (originally as Glasscock)

Manor, about 1836 or 1842, somewhere in there.

Dripping Springs, about 1857 (first post office - was a community before then, of course)

Lockhart, mid-1840's.

Bastrop, about 1804.

Liberty Hill, 1840's.

Leander, 1882, following Bagdad, 1854 (one mile east, moved to Leander following the railroad)

Cedar Park, 1874 or so

Pflugerville, 1872

Waterloo (later Austin), 1839

I'm pretty centrally located. If it takes more than 15 mins. (w/o traffic) to drive in any direction......it's probably NOT Austin (or Kansas) any more, "Dorothy."

And, being the Native Houstonian that I am, I can remember driving 10 mins. in one direction or the other and being out in the "country,"........aaah, all those fun, fun years ago.

RR is 20 miles out from downtown, SM is 30

bee cave is 17

Manor is 14.5

I would consider that the edges of the above cities are in austin but the town centers are not.

Here is a map with the boundaries of the city, which feels right.

Lakeway is a tricky one. I would consider it part of Austin. Cedar Park, Leander, RR, Georgetown, NOT Austin.

That does feel and look pretty close. Which, supposedly, it should.

Awesome! So why should we call them "Austin"?

No one should. They are towns in themselves with their own local governments.

The Austin city limit sign is where Austin ends/begins depending on the direction you are going.

I've known a few folks that moved to Pflugerville and said they lived in Austin. Some seem to think the outlying towns that turned into bedroom communities for Austin became Austin (and sadly many of them have).

It depends on whom you're speaking to. If you're talking to a person from another state, or a person unfamiliar with central Texas, you might for convenience "round up" and say you live in Austin instead of RR, Georgetown, Dripping Springs etc. You might qualify that with "just outside" or something.

If you're speaking to a local, and your town has its own name, then that's where you live.
