This discussion has taken a few twists and turns; but let me assure you...I'll NOT be driving the 500+ miles to Jackson, MS @ 55mph instead of 70, just to get 23mpg instead of 22.

There are many vehicles that only turn about 100RPM more for an incremental 5mph increase in cruising speed(our Volvo, for example, 2200RPM vs 2300 for the range from 65-70mph. It's much more fuel efficient to make sure the vehicle is properly tuned, tires appropriately inflated and the driver using smooth acceleration techniques rather than driving 55 on the 75mph toll roads to save 1mpg.
