Thank you in advance!

The standard route from Austin to Fredericksburg (290) is a pretty nice tour through the Hill Country and takes you through a few small towns on the way. Hye is a neat looking little town that you will drive through.

290 for most of the way just meanders through the hills and scrub brush. You don't really hit a big highway until you get to 281. If you want to get off the beaten path during your trip, turn onto FM 165 for a detour to Blanco. They have a nice little town square, Real Ale Brewery, and a small state park on the river.

Yeah, the 290 route has some wineries to stop and look at too, might have some photo ops at those.

Take Fitzhugh Rd instead of Hwy 290 heading west. Turn right on Fitzhugh as your heading away from Austin on 290W. There is a traffic light there. It's actually the original road to Johnson City before Hwy 290 was there. You'll pass by Pedernales Falls State Park and can loop through there for an additional scenic detour.

Further out toward your goal, you can go directly through Johnson City (instead of turning left to stay on 290) and continue north until 1323. 1323 basically parallels 290 but crosses through some open ranch land (watch for cows!) and heads to Willow City. From Willow City, you can take the north or south side of the Willow City loop. The south route is the quickest way back to Hwy 16 and comes out right at Eckert Rd, which you can take all the way to 965 (which takes you to Enchanted Rock. The north route takes you on a winding road that is beautiful (and crowded) during wildflower season, but still very nice out of season - some nice little vistas and valleys. It will come out further north on 16 and there are signs directing you to Enchanted Rock via the other end of 965.
