I live within the Austin city limits, and I was thinking about putting up a 12' x 20' portable garage on my front driveway. It's made out of a metal frame and a tarp-like covering. Does anyone know if there are restrictions on this? Is it similar to the resrictions on sheds? I can't find anything definitive online. Thanks!

Most properties have a setback restriction of 25' from the front property line, the property line is usually a considerable distance back from the street. These should be shown on the property survey required when you bought the property.

There are also setback restrictions from side property lines and side streets you should look into. You can verify all of these with a visit to the Building Permit office. A permit will probably be required.

See this thread. //www.city-data.com/forum/austi...l#post19934204

Dang, some of the links in that thread are broken because the City is revamping its website, which is in beta and has lots of broken links. Half of the links I tried on the City website take me to a 404 error page.

I found this:

Below is a list of items that DO NOT require a building or trade permit per City of Austin Code 25-12-243 ‘Local Amendments to the Residential Code.’ Any work not specified in the list below will require either a building or trade permit (http://www.austintexas.gov/department/content/contractortrade-permit - broken link).

Building Permit Exceptions
  • One story detached building 200 square feet or less – See zoning (http://www.austintexas.gov/Home/CHHome/PIO/HartR/projects/Austincityconnection/Redesign/worksheets/content/zoning-requirements - broken link) for requirements
The zoning link is broken but should have taken you to a page describing the setbacks I mentioned above.
