Hello all. I really need your help. My son and his friend, both 24 almost 25 are heading out to Austin this week! They don't have jobs and have never even visited Austin before, but my son is a songwriter and performer (rap) and he has heard this is the place to be. He graduated from FIU December 2010 and has not gotten into a career here in Miami.
I am supportive of this move, but how realistic is it to just show up there and expect to find a job? His degree is liberal arts, music and hospitality management.

He'll be fine. I moved here without a job and didn't know a soul, and I was younger than your son. I've lived here for 10 years.

Well so far it is 50/50! I guess the worst that can happen is that he will be back in Miami if it fails. He doesn't have furniture or anything to move, they are just driving there and think they will find a place to stay and get jobs. I have always wanted him to expand his horizons, but didn't exactly have Austin in mind. I was hoping if he left it would be for North Carolina or Colorado. Thank you so much for the quick responses!

My brother did the same thing, but went to big ole Los Angeles. He's been there for quite some time (maybe 4 or 5 years) and still nothing spectacular. The music biz is a hell of a thing to move for because you're either talented and know the right people that will get you to where you want to be or not talented enough and dirt poor. Though, that all depends on his skills apart from just music. I'd rather be pursuing music and moving to Austin as an electrical engineer than as a basketweaving specialist.

I have many friends how have moved from the NY/NJ/PA area to Austin. Austin is the place to be for musicians. However, he'll be starting out rough (which isn't a bad thing for character building). The good thing is that the musicians all support eachother.... so if he hooks up with a crowd, he'll have no issue finding work (waitin tables, bartending, the alike).

Best of luck.

The better bet would be Houston for rap. Have him stock up on cough syrup though.

I'm going to third that Houston is the better place as far as rap/hip hop goes.
