And these two are irrevocably linked, it seems. More and more people move into the area, drawn in part by the very green space that is destroyed in order to accommodate their need for big box stores within five minutes of their houses, rather than 15 minutes (I defy you to find any place in this area where there's a big box store more than 15 minutes away, unless it's someplace where the big box store that's less than 15 minutes away is still under construction).

Unfortunately, this is not the same as living close to the ocean. You don't get the moderated weather, the smell, the fog, the ability to stop by and see what birds are on the mud flats that morning. Years ago, I lived across the street from the ocean, and when I moved further inland, it took me a long time to get over missing the sound of the surf. It is just different being close to the ocean, and I miss it, too. But we have to be flexible, and learn to "bloom where we are planted."

For me, the worst part of Austin this past year has been the drought and the heat, as many have said.

Traffic on 35, both directions in & out of Austin. Extreme drought. Not that I don't mind heat, but without rain can be a big issue. Panhandlers. Worst of 'em all, the allergies. They made me look crap and look like I'm sick 24/7/365.

It's in Texas. Really, that's the only minus for me. I like the heat and I can avoid the traffic.

That's it. Exactly.

If I could just move it elsewhere...

For me,
1) Drought

After you've grown up swimming in the Atlantic and the Florida Gulf, the Texas Gulf is a real downer. It's like someone saying, "Whaadya mean you don't like the pizza here, have you been to xxxx( fill in with Gatti's, Mangia, Brick Oven, or whetever is currently trendy...)" It just doesn't do it for me.

We were like this for many years! For me the cure was learning MORE about Texas -- read Texas Monthly, the Texas Observer, learn about the struggles of progressives in Texas during the 1950s and 1960s. You will learn that Texas has always had reactionaries, and segregationists, and crazy conservatives BUT it has also always had people with a bigger, better notion of this state and they pushed back hard and still do. I guess what I am saying is that I studied history and found Texans I could be proud of and it made it a lot easier to live here and raise children as "native Texans."

I've lived all over the country - east, west, north, south. Lived in Europe for a while. Around people like me, and people completely unlike me. People who shared my viewpoints, and people who abhorred them. But I have never felt ashamed for living somewhere, or by being different from the majority of those around me. I really can't understand this - almost seems intolerant of differences. Just not part of my make-up. Seems kind of shallow, but YMMV.

My mileage definitely varies. I would feel physically unsafe living in most small towns in Texas. And I don't think that fear is unfounded.
