It is hard to predict, but often there's reports of a general way the rest of a season will go. Anyone know? We were going to seed our yard to take advantage of this wetness vs waiting till May...

This has been a really mild winter so chances are good it won't freeze. That said, a strong cold front is still possible until March 21 or so. I've lost a few plants around then to those last blasts of winter!

I think one year we had snow Feb 14th when we lived in Austin but that was a little later than usual. Our rule was to start planting by mid-Feb to early March.

And THAT is the problem with warm weather in early spring... it can be a setup for a late sucker punch blast of cold that kills off tender buds and shoots.

From the Natural Gardener:

Quote:
Natural Gardener: Helpful Information > Tips > February

When we get a couple of nice spring days, we are often tempted to plant things when it is just a little too early for that plant. Our average last frost date in the area is mid-March, so frost-tender plants should not be put out before then. The actual temperature is not the only thing to consider. Cold winds and very wet soil can also hurt plants that really want the drier, sunnier weather. There are still many plants that can be planted now and enjoyed in the next couple of months, such as cool-weather vegetables, cilantro, dill, larkspur and many others. So be patient and the time to plant tomatoes, basil, marigolds, etc. will be here before you know it.

We're gonna need to kill off some bugs or we'll be in BIG trouble this summer. I had a mosquito hold the door open for me yesterday!

One quick blast of cold would be good for the peaches and bad for the insects, yes?

And, of course, there's a difference between a last frost and a last freeze...not to mention a hard freeze.

Are you sure that wasn't a crocodile in disguise?
