The key to controlling fleas is to keep them out of your yard and the key to that is beneficial nematodes. These are microscopic organisms that live in the soil in your yard. They feed off the flea eggs which are laid in the soil. Another great benefit is that you won't have grubs or fire ants as nematodes eat their eggs also. You will have to water the yard in the summer because if the soil is completely dried out, the nematodes will die. Thus, if you live in an area where you can't water the yard, then this method won't work. Also, they will live through the winter and you usually only have to apply them every two to three years.

You must get them from a local nursery and when you get them, they should have been kept in the refrigerator, if they didn't come from the fridge, don't buy them. Also, you will need to keep them in the fridge till you apply them to the yard. Follow the directions exactly. I have used this method for many many years in Austin, with 2 in/out dogs and have no problems with fleas. It does help to have no carpet and leather furniture if the occasional flea gets inside. Also, I sprinkle diatomaceous earth around the perimeter of my yard to keep fleas from coming over from the neighbor's yard.

Is there a season for fleas? What do you all do to treat your cats?
Our cats are used to being allowed into the yard to sun etc during the day and they come in at night. We will of course keep them on house arrest for several weeks while everyone adjusts.

I haven't lived anywhere with fleas in 20 years, I am feeling a bit clueless
Keep 'em indoors....it's a myth that cats NEED to be let outside. Outdoor cats are exposed to all sorts of dangers...you can keep your cats engaged with simple toys.
