I would assume they'd just expand the existing campus; there is a lot of spare land right next door. Certainly easier than building new digs for the existing 2-3000 employees on top of the newbies!

Yeah but the article says that instead of expanding their current location they are going to look for another one.

Maybe they will build a smaller version of the mothership:

Apple: The Company's Plan For A Gorgeous New Campus (Photos & Video)

According to the article, that campus is meant to house 12,000 employees, and that's their main location. If Austin ends up being 7000 as they say, that's pretty darn significant. Keep in mind Apple is the most valuable company in the world right now (by market cap), and they have something like $100Bn in cash to do "something" with.

^ Exactly what I was thinking.

They're building a new campus to give themselves options for future expansion.

PS.. I made a typo in the title, it should read $304M. I've asked the mods to update it.

Lots of mostly empty Dell buildings near there that they could take over.

They are building it on those empty lots right next to their current campus on Parmer.
