I am a Yankee and have been used to stores like Value City (formerly) and Forman Mills. These are discount department stores where you can get brand new trendy clothes for 40-60% off (i.e. Ralph Lauren, Southpole, Tommy Hilfiger, Phat Farm, Aeropostale, as well as some cool not so popular brand outfits etc). It is cool how they are still able to make a profit while passing down their low prices to the public.

Is there any places like these in the Austin area? I have been recommended Burlington Coat Factory, Kohl's, and thrift stores. I'm not really into thrift stores. And Forman Mills makes Burlington and Kohl's look expensive. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Back before every town had an outlet mall, the 'factory' stores were great places to get deals on brand names. So much of the inventory is now designed to go into the outlets; but you might still try Round Rock Outlets and the mega outlet mall in San Marcos.

Steinmart also has some casual to preppy styles, if that's of interest(thinking about the men's area, that is).

Fellow former Yankee here: Neiman Marcus Last Call; Nordstrom Rack; Steinmart; TJ Maxx; Ross; Marshalls. Also, you say you're not really into "thrift stores" but Austin has a lot of designer retail/consignment stores that don't resemble thrift stores at all. I recently consigned a few designer dresses (tags still on) so you should check those out as well - I know a few are in the South Lamar South 1st area. Also, there's a designer outlet store on Burnet; can't recall the name right now. Happy Shopping!!

I never pay retail price for my clothes. There's no reason to, when it's eventually going to go on sale anyway.

Personally, i LOVE Marshalls. I'd place this ahead of TJ Maxx and Ross. I've been able to find a lot of really nice clothes there for a fraction of the price. Also, Nordstrom Rack seems to have some nice stuff, albeit it was a little pricier.

Last Call in South Austin is the Neiman's outlet; it's very hit or miss. Sometimes I can find really good deals and a wide selection ... other times, there's just notta lotta to be found. Also, it still leans toward the pricier side for the most part.

I still try to shop local, if at all possible. Some of my favorite clothing stores are Whole Earth Provision and T Kennedy, located just west of the Capitol. T Kennedy has a great bargain rack, as well as a $10 bin. The owner has exquisite taste in ladies' fashion — she selects fabrics and styles appropriate for Austin weather, so you see a lot of cotton, linen and other natural fabrics.

Yea... there are TJ Maxx, Ross, and Marshall up in Yankee town. I guess it's worth giving them a second look. I'll definitely check out that outlet mall in San Marcos. Sounds like a really cool spot!
