I'm a New Yorker. I'm exempt from having to be "nice"

Lol. Even I've gotten "nicer" having lived here though.

If I, "white" person had made note that the eye contact avoiding jogging couple were "black" I would have been accused of being a racist. In your scenario, their race is irrelevant. This is how racism keeps going and going and going...just like the energizer bunny.

People in Austin are more "warm" than in LA, but they're more reserved. In LA, I would get "hi" from pretty much anybody on the street all the time, while in Austin many seem more quiet and avoid eye contact, but when you're forced to have a conversation, it's always a nice time and people love to converse.

Although I've never challenged their beliefs, which is where it's actually at.

Overall, I'd say Austin is very nice from what I've seen so far.

The only chance they may be nice to you is if you agree with their collective extremist liberal attitude, while simultaneously not criticizing them for being intolerant hypocrites.

Even if you do, you're not from California so it may be a while before they stop looking down on you.

27% of us voted for Trump (& 7% voted independent), so you're trolling, inaccurate (or a putz). Only 10-12% are extremist liberal...so again, you're inaccurate.

Most (like 85-90% of) Austinites and Texans are live and let live (with varying degrees of economic conservatism).

Not trolling, 66-73% is quite the majority.

I've never noticed the avoiding of eye contact from black people. There is a definite cultural difference. That's not racist.

Yeah people are pretty nice here. I'm a black male and moved here about two months ago but visited several times having lived an hour south.

Many of the under 35 crowd definitely want to know "what's your story" when you meet them but that could also be due to the influx of non natives here.

Pretty good thus far, though I had a truck driver flick me off tonight after he was speeding up on me

Just so you know, a lot of us Austinites look down on Californians.

Indeed, if we could get together and pass a referendum to bar all immigrants from one state only, I am sure that California would win that election.

Austin was Californicated beyond repair years ago.

And we're not all liberal. Nor hypocrites. What you don't know about my city could fill the Erwin Center.. I can tell you're not from here, are you?
