Austinites are very warm friendly people. I think that goes the same for most of the Texas cities I've visited. For some it may take a bit of time for an introduction.

people tend to wave and say hello in the neighborhoods here in Austin - which i truly appreciate. on the freeway grind, many (not all by a long shot) drivers cut me some slack... daily... and i try to return the favor as often as possible.

Do people still do that now that it's become so gentrified?

No, not too much. It's growing like crazy out here! For example, Taylor. Tonight, at the little old Howard Theatre, SXSW is holding a screening of a Documentary about Barbecue, and then afterwards, there is a Q&A and Brisket at Louie Mueller's. Pflugerville is getting a COSTCO, and Aldi is still supposed to be coming. Across from Dell Diamond, a huge Convention Center/Hotel/Waterpark (Similar to Great Wolf Lodge) is about to go up. Downtown Round Rock is like Little 6th Street (saw that in Community Impact), because of the large amount of bars/pubs. My sister's neighbor said Nutty Brown is still coming too.
