Hi, I read many threads but I can't find updates or most recent threads. My husband applied few education jobs in Austin, Texas. I would like to know what are the best suburbs to live there - safe place/kid-friendly for my 3 children and good education. Also I want to know if Austin is good place for my older son - he has asthma. I read news about asthma and I learned that Austin might be not good for people with asthma.

The city of Austin is quite large now and there are fine places to live within the city as well, in particular are central (north and south), southwest, west , and northwest Austin. In the state of Texas, municipalities are not compelled to belong to one school district so there are students who live in Austin city limits who go to [in the areas I mentioned] Austin, Round Rock, Eanes, and Lake Travis ISD schools (the latter two considered best within the metro).

Austin can be an awful place for allergies (which affect asthma). Lots of things bloom and blow around Austin throughout the year. It depends on where you're moving from.

The best suburban areas of Austin would be NW, Williamson County and Southwest. Eanes and Lake Travis are the tops but I wouldn't think someone on a teacher's salary could afford those areas with a family. As a single teacher, I couldn't afford them for myself. Leander ISD, Round Rock ISD would be my top picks on teacher salary. Stay out of Del Valle or anything east of IH-35 unless it's in Williamson County.

In northeast Travis County (N of Austin), Pflugerville and Pflugerville ISD has good schools east of 1-35.

Still middle-class (though quickly becoming $liberal-riche$) central east Austin has some good affordable areas - with good schools - around French Place, Cherrywood, Delwood, Wilshire, and in particular, Mueller.

My daughter has asthma and for her the worst times of the year are spring and fall. She's done very well on advair and just taking an allergy pill daily.

ELGIN .... !!!!!!!!!
Or just outside of the county line ... Elm Creek subdivision.
We just bought a short sale house that originally, 4 years ago, sold for just under 150K. Got it for 79k ... almost a 50% reduction .... and was in PERFECT condition.

Plus the neighbors are WONDERFUL. Lots of mixed, young n old, etc..... with school bus going right by our front door.

Just my opinion ... for old pharts......

Without stating your budget for housing, we really can't give a good answer. You might consider the "best" suburbs with the "best" schools to be way out of your price range, but maybe not.

My husband is applying administration job at Texas School for the Deaf so I am aware that Austin is very big and I just want to know which suburb is good to live. Safe for my children. I am not worried about transportation or traffic but I would like to know which suburb is good to live.

Austin overall is a very safe city! There are MANY good places to live. Your price range will determine your choices. Texas School for the Deaf is in south central Austin. There are many places in south austin, SW Austin, as well as Buda that might fit.
