Personally, I care about power in a car only insofar as it is related to safety. My top priorities in a car are:

1. High gas mileage
2. Reliability
3. Safety, including power enough to move out of harm's way
4. Cost
5. Comfort/convenience

I would think most cars would have good air conditioners. Perhaps something with a really tiny engine wouldn't, I don't know. Right now I have a 2003 Honda Civic, which we plan to keep (or give to our son.) My husband has a 2001 VW Passat, which we intend to sell and replace with a car hopefully in keeping with my list. Haven't decided what that will be yet.

Paid for, has 370,000+ miles on it and still runs like a top, with minimal input over the years (mostly tires, brakes, and a serpentine belt replaced at about 365,000 miles).

That's not something you can safely assume. Cars which were originally purchased in the north may not have A/C at all, and even local cars may have A/Cs that are not working. It's something you absolutely have to test.

I was talking about new cars, not used.

No problem. I wasn't. The OP didn't say anything about only buying new.

I've seen the Fiat 500 around Austin a lot lately..

As for cars, I don't have one. I rely on my scooter, walking, bicycle, and the bus.

Right. I've been surprised to see the Fiat 500 take off so quickly in Austin. I see them everywhere now.

Of course, I don't think they're even allowed in Avery Ranch.

Wrong, i see them occasionally around here as well. Usually right between a Tahoe, and Escalade both with little ladies talking on their cellphones.

Interesting priorities. I thought many in this area had slightly different priorities than that when they go car shopping.

1) It's big because Texas is big (preferably a pickup)
2) If not a pickup, then Suburban, Expedition, or Yukon will work fine
3) It is either painted orange or has some longhorn symbol on it
4) It's big
5) It is really big

Gas mileage? You mean it's not normal to spend 100 dollars to fill up???
