That vehicle registration requirement is ridiculous, must be some thing new since the last time I dealt with it was 5 years ago. About all you can do is go to the tax office and request a copy of your vehicle registration receipt and see if the address has been changed. And if you don't get it filed before the deadline, you can file it after the deadline and you can get a refund of the taxes overpaid, as long as you lived in the house on Jan 1 of the year you are filing for.

The last state that I lived in automatically exempted us. I didn't realize that Texas didn't until looking at this thread. So, will applying for this automatically reduce our tax rate by 20% if we aren't currently exempted?

Also, according to the website, the requirements changed at the end of last year, so you must provide a copy of vehicle registration and drivers license which both have the address of the property in which you are requesting the exemption.

Not necessarily. Travis County will assess your taxes at appraised value minus 20%. The school district in your area makes its own decision on how much to exempt. Where I live the ESD (emergency services district) does not give an exemption.

The homestead exemption WILL reduce your property taxes. But probably not by 20% across the board.

Thanks for the reply, that makes sense.
