Consumer Reviews of RUUD central air conditioners 41% recommended.

Those reviews don't look to great, but are similar in % to Carrier and Trane (39% recommended) which I have more experiences with and tend to favor. They have all received more negative reviews than positive reviews. Trane and Carrier seem to be the low bidder on most competitively bid projects I have worked on. Which could be why I have no experience with Ruud, because they are more costly.

The list of best to worst ratings here http://www.furnacecompare.com/ac_ratings.html list Ruud at 4th highest.

I got a Ruud unit back in Apr 2007 which has a controller board (PCB) on the outdoor unit.

UARL-JEZ Series - Ruud Condensing Units

The board overheated and failed in summer of 2007 and again in 2008, and after that it's been reliable with a new board revision. This unit was in its infancy back then, so I bought a 10 yr warranty and a used window unit from a garage sale just in case. Nowadays it should be a pretty rock-solid unit. Mine will be in its 6th summer pretty soon, so I'm thinking about having its first maintenance/checkup done on it, even though it still blows cold.
