This happened on Saturday. It's been news here in the Ranch since then, but I didn't know how many other people were aware of it.

We had a 4 1/2 foot rattlesnake removed from our yard last spring (we're in Steiner). So for all you folks thinking of moving here and want to know if the snakes are really an issue, the answer is yes.

The answer is "yes" for what percentage of the Austin population, do you reckon?

A couple of quotes from the article:
Quote:
Paramedics say they typically respond to one or two rattlesnake bites each year.

Her injuries were not life threatening

Because she was treated so quickly. Last year a man in east Austin was bitten by a snake in his garage and died. And she still has a three-day hospital stay to look forward to, lest you think this was a minor incident.

Other Steiner residents should bookmark this page and put his number on speed dial:

Snake Bite Statistics
  • About 7,000 people are bitten by venomous snakes in the U.S. annually.
  • Only 0.2% (1 out of 500) venomous snake bites result in death
  • On average, 1 to 2 people in Texas die each year from venomous snake bites in Texas.
  • Roughly half of all venomous snake bites are "dry." That is, the snake does not inject venom into the victim.

From a real quick look at statistics, you are about three times more likely to be killed by lightning in any given year.

Yes, don't pet the snakes, but don't be paranoid about them. If you are worried about safety here, the frequent thunderstorms are statistically a much bigger threat.

People live in the hill country and then act surprised that snakes show up.

Typical suburban hysteria... "Oh my god!! What about the children!!"

Then they have to have a homeowners association meeting about "snake awareness".

Its like people that move to Florida and get flabbergasted when they find a 15 foot gator taking a nap on their patio...

OMG, don't tell people about Governor Perry shooting that coyote with the gun he carries when he is out jogging.

After all, people might have second thoughts about moving here if they knew the Governor could shoot them if they go jogging!

So....one person gets bit out in the Hill Country and suddenly it's a huge problem? We share the land with all sorts of critters... It pays to be aware and to keep your yards in good condition to avoid creating good hiding spots for mice and snakes.

They may be more prevalent here in Steiner. We've had 2 rattlesnakes in our yard, there was one in our neighbor's yard, and I have 3 neighbors who's dogs have been bitten. Our neighbor also just killed a coral snake in her yard last week. But that doesn't mean it's limited to Steiner or the far west areas of town. My mom lives in a condo in SW Austin on Brodie Lane and had a rattle snake in her yard last year. One of her neighbor's also had her dog bitten by one.

I'm just saying, for those people who are moving from areas like the Northeast, where there are pretty much no venomous snakes, it's pretty daunting. And I agree that a bite may not kill you, but it would sure be pretty miserable. And for those who love their pets, it is probably a concern.
