I-35 North thru Waco; pitstop at Czech Stop in West, TX for great prepared deli sandwiches and kolaches. Continue on I-20 East....

Getting off the interstates and cutting through East Texas looks A LOT faster on a map than it really is!

Thanks! We did the I-35 to I-20 - wish we weren't coming back so late tomorrow night or I'd check out the Czech Stop. Maybe next time.

I have to make frequent drives up thru Dallas, than eastward on I-20/30 to visit family. Between here and Dallas, the Czech Stop is the ONLY place I pullover for a snack!

Try the two a couple blocks off 35...they are way better and cheaper in my opinion. Gerik's is I think two blocks off 35, and Village Bakery is a little further into town. I like Gerik's the best.

As a Southern boy who can EAT some pastry and loves a good 'pig in a blanket', I have to say I was underwhelmed by the goodies from the West locations(2) as well as on the trip to Houston. Didn't stop me from EATING them, just didn't get all the hype.

Now, you want to wrap a pastry around a savory sausage and then add the sweet fruit component?,,,, THAT'll get my attention.

Will have to check those out...thanks. By habit, and the fact that its right off the exit, I hit Czech. Most of the time, I'm eating a deli sandwich, instead of a kolache(pastry). Gerik's have pre made sandwiches like Czech?

Not sure, but I don't think they do, I stop for the kolaches only...since it is usually sometime in the morning when I'm passing by...
Same exit, just two blocks into town...if you want a kolache or other breakfast pastry item. They do have a meat market also, so...?!?!

OK, kids...OUR turn to make the trek eastward . Headed to Madison, MS Friday AM and I'm going to try steve's recommendation of IH-35 up to I-20. IF it runs smoothly, I'll enjoy being able to maintain a 'brisk' pace; but, if it has tie-ups and congestion before and after Wax, I will NOT be a happy camper! (Won't be happy ANYway, spending the whole day driving to MISSISSIPPI, where it will be 4 degrees cooler but with 1000% humidity ) . I just hope the entire yard hasn't burnt to a crisp by the time we get back!

Y'all stay cool!!!

Well, LOOK at me!!!...necro-posting to update one of my old posts!

Gonna make the drive to Jackson, MS(Madison is the actual destination) Saturday morning and I've heard the construction between Austin and Waco along 35 is pretty much done.

Wondering about staying on the Interstate at least to Waco before cutting the corner and heading toward Tyler and points east OR taking our old tried and true trip up 79 to just before Shreveport.

I'm not crazy about staying on 35 and getting much closer to Dallas before cutting over; but there is something to be said for cruising at highway speeds(even if it adds miles).

Does anyone have a more recent review of the trip "back east"? Last year we took the 79 route and it was the usual go, stop, slow, go, trucks, slow, go. I don't think the weather will be a factor as it should clear by Sat and just be cold as heck! Dang....I don't like this trip!!!!

I'll deliver a minority report here and vote for Austin to Waco then take 31 to Tyler. Much of it is four lane. When you get to Corsicana, stop at the Collin Street Bakery for a pit stop. Cleanest bathrooms in Texas.

I find sticking to the interstate very boring.
