Ok, I was just complaining about "nothing to do in Austin" in another thread. This event sounds promising:

Austin Museum Day, Sunday, Sept. 23. "A free, city-wide rediscovery of Austin museums on Sunday, September 23, 2007 with 30 participating museums and sites."

Yes! How awesome is that! We are going to the Basin, Children's and the Sculpture one. I think it is a wonderful way to expose people to what the city has to offer!!
Did you also know that MexiArte is free every Sunday?

I know that the Mexiart museum is free, and that Children's museum is free for a couple of hours before they close... I do not think ALL of them are free, you better ask the specific one you may go before you do.
We went to the Wild Basin preserve, it was awesome!! Will go back there to hike!
Then to Children's museum... Will NOT go back there! Too crowded and nothing different or new, just a big playground. The best one I have been to is the Imaginarium in San Francisco.
And then we ended up in the Sculpture Garden and Museum, beautiful! They had tables outside with clay to work with. The place is so well taken care of. We want to go back there as well.

I agree with your comments on the Children's Museum - a real disappointment. Everett, WA has a pretty nice one.

I spent 3 hours with my two girls at the Bob Bullock state Museum. It was great. We showed up before they opened, and went in with a pretty big crowd, but we still got to see all 3 floors. It was a special day.

Missed this, much to my dismay. We opted to meet a dog we wanted to adopt but got nixed

Is this an annual event?

I grabbed an Austin Family magazine and it says that in there first Tuesday (I think) is family day at Austin Children's Museum. Not sure what that means though. Aren't they in the process of building another one?

This last one was the 10th one. As for the list of participants, I understand that it will depend on who signs up to be part of the special event every year.
