Years ago (circa 1997) I had rats in my NW Austin condo. Neighbors had them too. Basically the landlord said it was my problem and that it wasn't as bad as I making it out to be. I got 50 traps and each day would empty them into a large outside trash can (in my kitchen). The kitchen counters would be covered in feces every morning when I'd wake up. I empty the traps and clean the counters then go to work. I'd come home and empty traps and clean counters again.

Finally, I found the holes they were getting in through and put steel wool in them. That took care of it.

I never called "code enforcement" because I didn't know I could.

My brand new furniture was ruined (they got into the couches to make nests) and everything to me was "tainted".

A month later my lease was up. I moved and left everything there. Everything. I literally had to start over...all at my expense.

Rodents can be a big issue, especially with hantavirus (sp?) and people dying from it.
