About 5 years ago, I was in Austin facilitating a business meeting and a participant gave me a bag of "Texas rice" as a token of appreciation. I didn't know the person and never realized why it would become so important.

It was the best rice we've ever eaten! We inadvertently threw the bag out when it was empty and I have been trying for 5 years to find this rice!

I'm wondering if anyone here might have a clue about this. The person was from the Houston area (I think) and made a point that the rice was locally grown.

Any ideas?

Lori

I bet it was Texmati rice from Rice Select in Alvin Texas!

Great stuff and you can get it on-line. I hated the waste of four pound plastic containers so now I order rice directly from them 25 pounds at a time, comes in a recyclable cardboard box, in a heavy plastic bag.

Enjoy!

I would second that. Once you've had Texmati, it's hard to eat any other rice! It smells heavenly when it's cooking too. They also have two kinds of brown rice should you want to follow a more health-conscious path.

The main use of water from the Colorado river downstream of Austin is rice farming. There is quite an industry down there.....

I'm partial to Douget's...it's a Beaumont company...sadly...I can't get it in Dallas, so I stock up when I make it down to Austin, Houston or Beaumont...

Yes, it is available at HEB and all over Texas. The OP is in Virginia however! I have started to buy it direct from Rice Select to save on packaging! My family eats a lot of rice.

And their royal blend is amazing too!

Thanks for the suggestions! I'll try to find small bags of both to try. It did small great as it was cooking.

I'm a part time Texan now although I am in Virginia this week. I'll be back on Monday for Thanksgiving and the UT-A&M game.
