Thinking of moving to Meridian, south of Circle C, anyone know if the water in SW Austin is hard, do you need a water softener?

No, you don't need a water softner. It's City of Austin water.

You could benefit from a water softener, yes, even in Austin. The hardness level in all of Austin city water is 6 - 8 grains hard. It's not nearly as bad as some of the outlying cities, but still there. Over time you will begin scaling your water heater, dishwasher and plumbing fixtures.

I lived in Pflugerville and in Circle C Ranch. Night and day difference in water quality. We had a water softener in Pflug. not in CCR. I didn't have trouble with scaling and I lived in CCR 7 years. That being said, we got Ozarka delivered in the 5 gallon bottles because the water did not taste very good. I found I at least needed to filter it to drink it, esp. when I was pregnant and my sense of taste and smell were really strong. I live in the Seattle area now and the water tastes great so we do tap. I think it's all relative to where you coming from.

My 1977 house in N. Austin didn't have a softner, but when I replaced the 10 year old plus (think is was near 15) water heater for efficiency reasons when I bought the house in the late 90s, it had almost no scale in it. Same water in S. Austin. You will spend more money on a softner and maintenance than you will ever save, and it will be more of a hassle.
