What are some of the best clothes to get nice clothes for a 23 year old casual male? I like generally preppy casual clothes like AE, banana republic, etc. i want to check out stores that have clothes that arent necessarily mass produced that you see people wear on a regular basis. i know there are a lot of shops downtown obviously but which ones should i really check out?

I don't usually shop for clothes downtown, but there are some places near 2nd. South Congress has all kinds of stuff, otherwise I'd just recommend the outlets, either Round Rock or San Marcos.

I like Roadhouse rags:
MySpace.com - Roadhouse Rags - 100 - Female - AUSTIN, Texas - www.myspace.com/roadhouserags
Good, westerny vintage.

Also - a good place for jeans, and other guy clothes:
Work Clothes & More
Work Clothes and More!

1701 W Ben White Blvd # 160
Austin, TX 78704

There is also a guy on soco who does awesome embroidered western shirts... he has a booth there most weekends.

Texas Custom Choppers, 2203 RR 620 North, 512-266-2208 has a great mens/womens boutique. They have really cool clothes, jackets, boots, jewelry. Really nice and unexpected plus you can check out the cool custom bikes.

Austin ain't a shiny shirt guy type of town. We likes shirts you get at restaurants...like P.Terry's limited edition series paired with baggy cargo shorts with a couple of well placed bleach and/or grass stains, flip flops (ones with the beer bottle opener in the sole) and a UT cap with a broken brim. On the weekends we generally dress down from that.

Yes! Spot on, and thinking on that, it's one of the reasons we like Austin over Houston.

I've been shopping TJ Maxx since the mid 80's. Same stuff you get at Macy's, et al, but cheaper. Sometimes some irregularity, sometimes just last season's. I think they get new stuff on Tuesdays but check with your local shop. On Saturdays it looks like mall rats have been rifling thru the merchandise but doesn't cost any more.

Also check the clearance rack, deal of the century.

I also find good stuff at Academy. 'Specially the 'Austin Clothing' shirts, shorts, pants, T's. Lot's of sports gear.

DSW for shoes.

Check out Slate on Burnet Road/45th - not a huge selection, but well-edited selection of guys clothes.
