Our family lives in San Antonio and our father-in-law normally travels into town to visit us from Florence,TX (very small town outside Georgetown). The trip is getting a bid tedious for him in his old age so I want to plan a trip to the area and I'm hoping to get some suggestions on accommodations and things to do while we are there that would include an 8 and 4 year old. I'm hoping to be no more than 30-40 minutes from Florence; it seems like Copperas Cove, Georgetown, Killeen, Temple, and Round Rock (but that's stretching it) are the closest so I'm hoping for recommendations in that general area. It would just be for a weekend and I want it to be kind of relaxed and anti-city but still keep the kids entertained (since we're in a big city and travel to the major TX towns frequently). Thanks!

Especially if dad-in-law is closer to 183, the trip to the Steam Train is less than an hour, perhaps closer to 40 minutes...

A friend told me that there is a water park called Summer Fun in Belton. It's either on or near the lake. Innerspace caverns in Georgetown is fun as is San Gabriel park. There is also a swimming hole on the river across the highway from the main park. Mel's lanes is a fun thing to do as well. It's mainly bowling but also has a game arcade. I forgot to mention it's in Georgetown as well. Check and see if there is anything going on that weekend on the Georgetown square. You could go have some German food at the restaurant/biergarten in Walburg...it's kid friendly too You could do some shopping or window shopping and check out Salado. It's like Wimberly except north of Austin. You might also be able to go to Cameron park zoo, but not sure if it's too far from where you want to roam.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I looked up Innerspace Cavern already and it looks neat, but my husband has an aversion to caves so I'd have to do that alone with the kids.....its still on the list.

I found a ride through safari in Copperas Cove - has anyone done that, is it worth it? It's something that my FIL could go with us on since it doesn't involve a lot of walking.

I was trying to find festivals too but I have a feeling we won't be traveling 'til more like fall time and I haven't found anything (I did see the Red Poppy Festival in Georgetown in April, so will plan that for spring next year).

The annual Gathering of the Clans and Highland Games in Salado is in November as is the Central Texas Area Museum.

Art in the Square in Georgetown is October 6-7.

Chisholm Trail Days in Georgetown is October 19-20.

The Georgetown Air Fest is November 3.

Wesley Fest is the first Saturday/Sunday in November each year in Georgetown.

There's more, but that's a start.
