Specifically, how is resale? And I know the elem are good but havent heard much about McCallum. And why such discrepancy between McCallum and Anderson-which seems to get lots of raves- when they are so close?

They are both good schools. I went to both and my sons went to both (moved around neighborhoods).

thanks - it just seems that Anderson gets all the press because of the IB program. I've never heard anything about McCallum except about the fine arts program, which I understand is great. When considering resale though, do most people rank Anderson higher than Mc?

I don't know anyone who's had difficulty selling their zoned-for-McCallum home. Ours, and many others I've known, sold "as is" and before the home was put on the market. Anderson is a good school, but I consider Mac just as much of a plus. We're in the 31 zip now (still zoned for McCallum) and homes in our area aren't on the market for long.

All of my children graduated from McCallum. At Mac, kids come from low to very high economic levels...people who could send their child anywhere. This is as it has always been in my 18 years of experience as a Mac parent (off and on, due to a 14 year age difference between my oldest and youngest).

Go Knights!

We just bought something in this area but were focused soley on Doss> Murchison> Anderson. We did look at something that fed to Hill, and wish we had bought it, but avoided McCallum just because everyone seemed to shy away from it. I don't have any hard and fast reasons.

I don't mean to be smart aleck, and not intending to start a conflict between two good schools (IMO), but I don't know who "everyone" is. They're not among the people I've known in my 30 years in the area zoned for McCallum. I don't think it's fair or warranted to make that knd of statement.

When we looked in 78731 we were specially looking for McCallum OVER Anderson! McCallum is a smaller, more diverse school and we preferred it over Anderson. I know families zoned to McCallum who live on Lake Austin who can afford to send their kids anywhere, most chose to go Highland Park elementary, private middle school, and then back to McCallum.

We actually had a contract on a house zoned for Anderson that eventually fell through . . . we didn't fight too hard to keep the deal going because of my misgivings about Anderson!

Anyway, the problem won't be selling a home in 78731, the problem will be BUYING one! Inventory is low and going very fast right now. And unless you have a kid going to high school in the next 1-2 years, so much could change with either school that too much planning ahead doesn't make much sense.

I said that I didn't have any hard and fast reasons, meaning that maybe the concern was totally unwarranted.

Btw, Anderson is a math and science magnet where as McCallum is Fine Arts. Both are great, it just depends on what you are looking for in a school.

Actually not true. Anderson has an IB program not a science and math magnet.

LASA is the Liberal Arts and Science Academy and it is the only High School Magnet Program.

McCallum has the Fine Arts Academy, not technically a magnet but admission to the program is competitive and open to all in the district. Austin High has the Global Academy but is only open to people who live in that attendance zone. The IB program at Anderson is open to transfers, so you can live anywhere in 78731 and still attend the IB program at Anderson if you are qualified and offered a spot.
