Well... I live in 78701, so I think I'm qualified?

Since you seem to question my Austin creds - here they are - I was 78703 before 78703 was cool. I've lived, worked and played in Austin since the early 1970s.

But, I am not so stuck in Austin that I can't recognize there's a whole world full of vibrant and interesting cities that Austin couldn't learn from and get even better by taking a lesson now and then. Vancouver comes to mind as one of my favorites, but there are others. I categorically reject that such examples of what Austin can and should be will be found in WillCo and the denizens who live there.

Check! We have one real Austin resident. Someone who can actually vote in city elections, pays city taxes, and can even get an Austin library card. Your opinion should matter more!

I used to live in 78703! Also 78704, before either one was cool (except we knew they were, of course). And 78701 and 78705 and I'm sure I'm missing one somewhere. And I wasn't questioning your Austin creds, it just seemed from your posting that you would be someone who would be happier in a much bigger place. Which could still be the case, of course.

Yes, the world is full of wonderful, vibrant cities, each in their own way and, hopefully, not all the same way because what would be of the slightest interest in that? The trick is to appreciate each city for what it is and not try to make it into a replica of someplace else that you'd rather be. Because the end result of that kind of thinking is, frankly, tedium.

I'd much rather each city treasure the things and ways that make it unique and make preserving those, while growing, a high priority. Because, when you get right down to it, it's those things, not the skyscrapers, that make people want to move wherever it is they want to move (unless the only thing they love is skyscrapers), and if you forget about those in the rush to "progress", you're cutting off your nose to spite your face.

Hey, I pay city taxes! Still own a house in Barton Hills and pay four times the taxes on it I do on the ranch. That count?

It's an interesting question. I have rental property in the city also, so what about that whole "taxation without representation" thing? No luck for me, I still can't vote for city council...

Why is it that so many of the high rises downtown don't have underground parking? Instead, they seem to waste up to 8 floors with parking garages.

Do you have any idea how expensive underground parking in Austin is?
