How is the traffic on Saturdays? I drove through Austin from San Antonio one Saturday and I35 through downtown had been closed down to about one lane. Is this a normal occurrence? (This was a few years ago.)

Thanks for any info.

Mostly fine - though during football season I35 can get a bit backed up near the stadium.

Our course if there's work on the road that can always cause a back up

I notice traffic on south bound 35 every time I head south on the weekend. I can't figure out what the deal is, but traffic comes to a crawl starting from the upper/lower split to about Oltorf, I think?? ...or somewhere around there. And then, it clears up for no reason. There are no accidents, stalls or anything. I never understood that. I rarely travel that far south on the weekends, so I always get "tricked" and forget to incorporate extra travel time.

The last couple of years the State Highway Department has been shutting down portions of IH-35 through Austin on weekends as they finish and connect many of the new fly-overs they have been building.

No, not normal. Must have been roadwork. On the other hand traffic through downtown often gets backed up due to various events. This Saturday (9/1) it will be busy due to the Longhorns opening home game.

If you are just driving through, you might consider taking the toll road around the east side. It's never backed up, and the traffic just flies.

Yes, that's what I was mainly asking about. Thanks

Do you think it's probably more people driving to the riverside/southtown area?

I'm really not sure what the issue is. I experience this on non-game days, non-construction days - just regular ol' days. I haven't quite figured it out.

Generally, Saturday afternoon traffic on I35 is fairly heavy, especially southbound, but really either way through downtown. Saturday and Sunday mornings are fairly light but you cannot count on "light weekend traffic" on I35 outside of early morning.
