BLUE NORTHER | The Handbook of Texas Online| Texas State Historical Association (TSHA)

According to some weather reports it's on the way here!! Love when this happens. I think it's my forum buddy who thinks I'm a terrorist that talks about it. Seriously, I should get over that, right?

Just in time - our 17 year old central air unit just went kaput on Tuesday.

Borrowed a son's extra little window A/C for our bedroom last night & tonight, so hopefully the worst of the warm weather is over.

We probably won't install a new central air system until February or early March.

Some Halloweens have been way too hot in the past, it will be nice to have it a bit chillier. Current forecast for the 31st is low of 60, high of 76.

When I first moved here I would wear shorts in 50 degree weather. Now, 70 with a breeze is cold and I put a jacket on.

I went to college in Iowa, kids there start going barefoot when it hits 40 degrees in the spring! But I'm all Texan now, low of 60 in October is chilly! Anything below 40 degrees and I complain and moan and wear my heaviest coat!

I grew up in Wisconsin, and I can't believe what a flimsy jacket I wore! So after living several years in Texas and CA, my grandmother died at the beginning of December (this is in 1980) and I went back to Wisconsin for the funeral. As my next door neighbor in Huntsville used to say, "I lacked to died!" Really, I shivered so much, I had back spasms. Our bodies really do adjust to where they are. If I had to go back to Wisconsin, I imagine I would adjust, but I don't want to do that. A childhood in the snow is fun; adulthood in the snow is not. I have really enjoyed this fall - cooler temps and enough rain that it doesn't feel droughty (I know the drought persists.) Much better than last year. And the cool temps coming will give me a chance to wear some of my cold weather clothes. Its all good.

It is kind of funny, because I rarely bother to dress up for cold weather until it gets down below 40 or so, whereas my Minnesota relatives tend to put on light jackets, etc. somewhere around 60 or below. Part of it, I think, is I know that it is temporary here and I don't have the 'right' clothes anyway, while my relatives are just starting down the natural 'bundle up' path toward frigid hell and it will last a long time.....
