If you don't even live in Austin, why do you say that the council is unresponsive to the entire city? Of course you don't feel like Austin is responsive to you. You don't even live in Austin!

Also, no one is forcing people to move anywhere. If they move to the core, its because they wanted to.

THIS.

What we're talking about is housing choice, not a social engineering exercise where the government forces people at gunpoint to live on top of one another....sheesh...

They aren't responsive to the city because the councilman don't represent the population. But that is changing for the better. I don't expect city council to represent me. But it should better represent SW Austin, NW Austin, etc. than it does today.

The density movement may not force people to move, but by limiting development in affordable areas in favor of expensive, and restricting transportation, their grand scheme will fail. Only wealthy people will live in the core. And they will have people living outside the core anyways.

The current city council system is 6 at-large (city-wide) places and 1 mayor. An at-large system means the candidate represents the entire city. For the record, city council members contact information are readily available.

Currently, 2 city council members are unique attitudes to neighborhoods (Laura Morrison, Kathie Tovo). 2 city council members are unique attuned to minority concerns/neighborhoods (Mike Martinez, Sheryl Cole); and 2 city council members especially attuned to finance (Bill Spelman) and high technology (Chris Riley).

Plus, our Mayor Lee Leffingwell is pro-business, but also pro-environment (past Chairman of the Environmental Board).

The Austin City Council represents us Austinites fine. In survey after survey, Austinites are very pleased in general with City of Austin services. Most Austinites feel the city council is doing a good job. The desire of district representation does not reflect on the current slate of city council officers, rather than the political structure of 6 city council places vs. 800,000+ people.

If he wanted at least some credibility, he shouldn't have told me that he doesn't even LIVE in Austin.

It only seems fair to have equal representation, doesn't it?

And when you have paid a single thin dime in property taxes yourself, you will have some credibility.

As you see, credibility has no bearing on opinion.

Technically, I will likely never directly pay property taxes, as I will rent.

Property tax is a part of your rent.
