Those are even harder to come by. If you want it, you need to pull the trigger. There are probably 3-4 people minutes behind you to take it. Austin landlords don't need to have a "supply" of renters, simply b/c there is approx 25-35% less housing than demand is requiring. They just hand the sign out, and renters come and get it.

Pretty simple.

So are there people who move out of the area because housing is unavailable?

Yes. Or at the very least outside their target area. Let's just look at your example - you're looking in CP/RR area, right?

Let's assume that you don't find anything by say, Mid-April... How much longer would it be before you just took that place in Leander, or Pflugerville, Georgetown, etc.

Availability is why suburbs exist.

I have already included those places in my searches. Which towns, if any, have cheaper housing available further in advance? Does Llano, Salado, etc. have more housing available? I don't want to go on a fool's errand of looking in small towns that have nothing available anyway, I have done it before.

To Steve's point previously, you're about a week ahead of the timeline for April rentals, and about 3 weeks ahead of the late April rentals. It would be completely pointless to rent a place clear on the backside of yonder, just because you're impatient now.

You'd be kicking yourself on that drive every day.

I wouldn't necessarily call it impatience... It's stressful to not know where you're going to live until a few weeks before, and it makes it more difficult to plan. If the OP is used to a longer timeline for rentals becoming available due to 60 day notice instead of 30, then it's an adjustment.

Neither do I wish to rush into overpriced housing just because it's close to the city. Are there more affordable locations further away from the city that do not demand a move-in date next week?

Yes, but the ones that will be available for late April are not on the market yet.
