The wife and I are planning a quick 4day trip to Austin. Perhaps 5. I've only been to San Antonio when I was in basic training but my boss who is from Ft. Worth keeps telling me to visit Austin.

Is room-sharing for 4-5days an option? I would be renting a car as I find that is the only way to truly EXPLORE while on vacation.

We are in our 30's, are not fixated on nightlife but rather nature, scenery, history and generally cool things. The wife likes to shop at local boutiques when we are on vacation and I like checking out Gods works of nature and do a little light hiking...we also LOVE rivers and lakes.

What are free things or inexpensive things to do in or around Austin...and where should we stay for our vacation keeping in mind we like to travel on a bit of a budget.

Here's a host of free (or not) things to do. You can get email blasts with updates every few days...
Free Fun in Austin

Can't help with accommodations; but I'll mention it can get really tight during rodeos, festivals and such.

Thanks for the responses guys! I like the ideas. Keep 'em coming. We like Country Music as well, like Zach Brown, Eric Church, Florida Georgia Line type stuff. And we LOVE a big steak! Any ideas there??

If you have time, about an hour south is Gruene. Gruene Hall is a fantastic spot for country music. If you want to mix country music and BBQ, you can either drive to Smitty's in Lockhart for lunch, then Gruene for music. Or, one of the Saturday afternoon shows and the Salt Lick for BBQ dinner. Smitty's is the better BBQ option.
