24 hour restaurants: Twenty-four 24-hour Austin restaurants (in 24 hours) | Fed Man Walking

Magnolia Cafe, South Congress, is probably one of the best places to eat on that list.

Inexpensive crash pads: Surprisingly there are quite a few rooms for as little as 30/night.

For short stays when temperatures are moderate this might not be a bad option. $40/night plus park pass. Screened shelters at Mckinney Falls State Park, only 10 miles from downtown. Showers are located near the screened shelters.

Good find! Some days in January you can freeze your toes off and others you can sunbath. From owning a sailboat on Lake Travis for many years I can say with some certainty that you can usually swim in the lake from late April to early November, without being a polar bear. The local yacht club sponsers a New Years Day sailboat race called the Frost Bite Regatta, for good reason.

This article in the local paper talks about many of the companies who's interests are related to the oil & gas industries, that have established themselves in Austin.

Oil, gas growing into key piece of Austin

Quote:
The industry’s employment base here remains much smaller than those of the area’s high-tech firms, government agencies and universities. But a massive influx of money pouring into local energy firms, combined with the industry’s ripple effect through the region, is drilling oil and gas deeper and deeper into the Austin economy.
Some of the companies described:

Brigham Exploration - Statoil

Brigham Resources

Three Rivers

Concho Resources Inc.

Venado Oil and Gas

Jones Energy

Reliance Energy

Texas American Resources

Flare Industries

Tolteq

Drillinginfo Inc.

Emerson Process Management

Statoil

Teaching jobs in Austin (very hard to find):

The state cut over 2 billion dollars out of the public education budget 2 years ago, they replaced part of that funding for this coming year but public schools are struggling.

Around 75% of the schools in Texas are sueing the State over the budget cuts, but we don't know how that is going to turn out yet. http://www.dallasnews.com/news/polit...om-schools.ece

http://www.courthousenews.com/2012/12/10/52962.htm

There are however some other areas in the state where there is a demand for teachers if you have special skills.

The approved statewide teacher shortage areas for the 2012-2013 school year are:
Bilingual Education/English as a Second Language
Foreign Languages
Mathematics
Science
Special Education

You may have better luck in lower-performing districts, but to be honest there are more elementary teachers than there are jobs. Unless you know someone, you are going to have a hard time finding a job, certainly for this year.

As I mentioned earlier, your best bet is to sub for the schools in which you are most interested. It gets your foot in the door and gives the staff and principal a chance to get to know you. You can also volunteer at any school without working there.
